| Costa Rica Inshore Fishing Inshore fishing takes place on small boats on the ocean, close to shore. Typically, you will fish for marlin, sailfish, roosterfish, dorado, tarpon, snook, king and Spanish mackerel, Jack Crevalle, Cubera Snapper, African Pompano, Barracuda and Triple Tail and many more. These species are found close to shore in and along underwater rock formations. Thus, smaller boats are necessary because they need to be highly maneuverable. Excellent inshore fishing can be found all along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica all year-round. Inshore fishing tactics are varied. You can troll live baits (blue
runners, mullets) for all species, bottom fish for all species and
cast at Snappers. Fly fishing for Roosterfish is a must for avid fly
fishermen. It takes some patience the first few attempts, but it is
well worth the effort! At the base of the active Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal is easily the most popular inland fishing destination. Located about a four-hour drive from San José, it is 22-miles long and Costa Rica's largest lake. Fishing in Lake Arenal can be quite successful, as there is
plenty rainbow bass, which earned its name because of the subtle
gradations of color and the fact that they are fished just as you
would for largemouth bass. Limit is five fish per day, and they
often run seven to nine pounds, although the average is closer to
three pounds. The Gulfo Dulce ("Sweet Gulf") is the 10th deepest gulf in the world having more than 1,000 feet in some places. It is lined with mangrove estuary, river mouths and reef, offering one of the most unique inshore fishing opportunities on the planet. The endless volcanic coastline that runs along this 'tropical fjord' makes it prime area for a number of prized inshore species. The area is famous for "giant" Roosterfish as they prefer volcanic rock outcrops. On the western end of the Gulfo Dulce, large cubera
snapper, groupers, and amberjacks are to found. Occasionally a mako
shark will surprise an angler when it skyrockets 10 feet in the air
after taking a bait. Inshore fishing on the reefs, islands and rocks and in the surf and river mouth gives you the opportunity to catch an incredible variety of sports fish. The list of available species includes: Roosterfish, Crevalle Jack, Snook (four different types), Snapper (five different types), Spanish, Sierra and Chub Mackerel, Bigeye and Bluefin Trevally, Stripped Corvina, Pacific Bonito, Longjaw Leatherjack, Mexican and Pacific Barracuda, Trippletail, Rainbow Runner, Skipjack Tuna, Jewfish and Dorado. These waters hold numerous, current International Game Fish Association world records including the All Tackle record for Snook and various fly rod records for Roosterfish, Snapper, Jacks and several other species. The reason the fishing is so good in the Gulf is that the rivers flowing from the mountains surrounding the Golfo Dulce carry mineral rich waters from the rain forest out into the Gulf. In addition, there is a well documented "upwelling" in this region feeding into the Gulf from the Pacific Ocean. This simply means the clean deep blue waters of the Gulf Stream offshore flood into the Gulf from open water every day with the tides.
